What to expect on a cultural cruise
Ignite your imagination and follow in the footsteps of the intrepid explorers of the past. Explore countless UNESCO world heritage sites, immerse yourself in fascinating cultures and discover ancient civilisations, all from the comfort of your boutique cruise ship.
Russian Far East
Uncover the ancient folklore associated with this mysterious corner of the world on a cruise through Russia’s far east. Meet the isolated indigenous populations who have hunted whale and herded reindeer here for centuries. Hear the tales of the displaced Alutiiq and Yupik people and explore the abandoned fishing villages and Paleo-Eskimo camps on Wrangel Island.
On our Aleutian Islands, Russian Far East & Bering Sea Discovery itinerary you’ll circumnavigate the Bering Sea, exploring the rich culture of the last of Russia’s indigenous people. Remnants of World War II are also prevalent here. The two miles of the Bering Strait are all that separate Russia and the USA.
South & Central America
From the edges of the Mayan empire to isolated indigenous tribes, the diverse human cultures of these lands have long shaped this part of the world. Cruise the Pacific coastline of the Americas and discover ancient, ruined cities, colonial architectural masterpieces and traditional ways of life, alongside vibrant modern Latin American living.
Even the other-worldly fjords of Chile have their own human history. Aboard our In the Wake of Darwin’s HMS Beagle: Chilean Fjords Discovery cruise, you’ll visit the desolate Tierra del Fuego archipelago. This remote region was once occupied by the Yaghan people before it was discovered by Europeans and later visited by Charles Darwin. You’ll also call in at the small island of Mocha, a regular stop for French and Dutch pirates in the 16th century.
Out of this vast and fascinating history has emerged a unique blend of modern vibrancy and tradition. Whether you prefer the buzzing atmosphere of a modern city steeped in history or love learning about indigenous traditional ways of life, culture is in plentiful supply in this part of the world.Alaska
Remote and wild Alaska has a human history almost as intriguing as its natural one. Famous for its gold rush past, frontier towns and pioneering railroads are the most obvious signs of human history here. This vast and rugged land is also home to indigenous populations, Norwegian heritage sites, historical trading posts and World War II relics.
Join us on our Kamchatka & Aleutian Islands Discovery cruise and visit the historically significant Attu Island. The island was the location of the only World War II land battle fought in the United States. More than 3,500 American and Japanese soldiers died at Massacre Bay on the island. Later we visit Unga Island where Aluets established a fur trading post in 1833. The island has since been abandoned with the relics of the town still in place.
